Illusion and Lies In today’s manhood it seems as if expectations for people are send too high and the rile one has to put in to achieve what is expected of them is unfair. In order to avoid failure some retreat to antagonist things such as existing in the past and/or creating their own illusions and lies, which is exactly what two characters in Tennessee Williams’ plays “The crosspatch menagerie” and “A Street Car Named swear” do. Amanda Wingfield, character from “The scrap Menagerie”, and Blanche Dubois, character from “A Street Car Named longing”, both avoid reality by living by of those around them, thriving off of forethought of gentlemen c bothers, and living in the past. Amanda Wingfield is an elderly s turn outhern belle who is a mother of two, tom turkey and Laura. Tom is a big asset in her life, as he pays all of her bills. She relies on Tom’s income to pay for all of her necessities, w hile also relying on him to set up her little girl’s future. Laura grew up with a disability and blames that for her inability to square up a gentlemen fellowship herself. Amanda pushes her son to find her daughter a gentlemen caller. Amanda puts so many responsibilities in Toms hands that she, in a way, treats him kindred the stand-in for her husband that walked out on her.

Amanda is a typical southern belle, very helpless on the attention of men. Her husband ran out on her years before she became dependent on her son, and shiny for her daughter to eviscerate her own gentlemen callers. h Amand a grew up like a typical southern belle in t! he fact that her world revolved around men, or in her case Gentlemen Callers. She forever talks about her past to her children and gets a sort of smell out of relief and her mood lifts whenever she does. Laura is crippled collectible to a wooden leg problem, and Laura blames her handicap for her not having any gentlemen callers.
